It’s not every day that a Canadian legend turns 80. On Friday, April 8th, David Suzuki celebrated his birthday at The Carlu in downtown Toronto. The event, by JK LIVE Productions, was held to celebrate one of Canada’s most famous environmentalists. There was a canoe hanging from the wall and you could win the chance to name a new species of bee at the silent auction. The main event included video messages from the likes of Chris Hadfield and Rick Mercer, speeches from members of the Suzuki family and music from Chantal Kreviazuk, Serena Ryder and a group of Inuit throat singers.
Then, of course, there was the cake. Created by one of our talented cake designers, the five-tier cake looked as though it was made of wood and was covered in edible meringue mushrooms, sugar blades of grass and beautiful, hand painted monarch butterflies. This cake looked like you might find it in the middle of the forest.
Chocolate bark, meringue mushrooms, sugar pastillage butterflies, matcha moss and several hours of hard work came together to create a show-stopping cake that even Mr. Suzuki himself had to stop to admire! We were honoured to be part of this iconic Canadian’s birthday celebration.
