Paris Love: Marvelous Macaron Day in the city of lights

The day began with a macaron tour of Paris, hosted by the macaron maven herself Madame Mardi Michels from EatLiveTravelWrite.

We walked around the Saint Germain des Pres and visited the most delicious macaron houses. Each place was superb and the leaders of these macaron boutiques are renowned for their craft, wining awards in Paris and abroad for their artistry in pastry and for making the tastiest macarons with the most diverse set of flavours.

After sampling macaron in a lovely square with fountains serenading us in the background and under the hot Parisian sun, we headed for shelter at our host school La Cuisine Paris, where the group learned to make their own macarons.

The afternoon was full of ganache and laughter and the participants made the most beautiful macarons, with feet!

It was a sweet day indeed and we look forward to eating our macarons for the next few days, we wish we could share them over this blog with our fans around the world!

Love from Paris!

Paris Love: Day 4 – Sweet Walking tour and croissant and pain au chocolat class

Day 3, well it was actually Day 1 with the whole group! We got to meet our new friends from around the globe and share some good laughs and LOTS of sweets at our first class: croissants and pain au chocolat.

Our hosts at the school La Cuisine Paris were wonderful and we made too many croissants that we are still trying to pawn them off to taxi drivers and neighbours.

After our croissant and macaron experimenting in the kitchen we went for a Sweet Tour of Paris with Flavors of Paris. Our wonderful guide Cecile took us to Saint Germain des Pres for more sweets! We tasted macarons, had French cider, the most delicious and thin and perfect salted caramel crepes, gelato, French bread and chocolat.

It was a truly sweet day and we are lucky to have such a great school and tour leaders around us!

A bientot!

More updates from our Paris office soon!

REEL EATS: “Chocolat”

REEL EATS: Hear, Smell, Taste, Touch and Watch What You Eat

REAL EATS is held monthly, where chefs and food lovers gather together for a gastronomic film, story-telling, and delicious food! The events take place at some of the top restaurant venues around the GTA. At last night’s sold out event, the film featured was “CHOCOLAT” , directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. The six course Chocolat-inspired menu was created by the talented Chocolatier and pâtissier Chef Bruno Elsier, along with Aphrodite Cooks’ Chef Vanessa Yeung.

The evening’s menu featured an array of sweet and savory dishes. A few of the favorite dishes enjoyed over the course of the evening were the “Our Serious Mayor’s French Shallot and Lentil Cream Soup with Cocoa Butter” as well as the dessert tasting which included “Shades and Heat of Chocolate”, “White Chocolate Mousse with Lime” and “Creme Brulee of Milk Chocolate and Dark”. All dishes were to die for, you could tell that a great deal of time and effort went into the planning of each menu item.

Throughout the evening we had the privilege of listening to three story tellers, each told us a very different story that related back to food. Some were stories about personal adventures, while others were creative poems about “the art of eating” and “food”. One of these fabulous story tellers was our very own Macaron Queen Mardi Michels, who spoke about her fascinating adventures overseas in Paris.

At the end of the night, guests had their tickets drawn for an amazing raffle and were given a delicious chocolate cupcake topped with butter cream icing and a cocoa infused macaron with marshmellow filling courtesy of Le Dolci. Overall, the evening was a great success! The menu, atmosphere, guests and volunteers made it a night to remember.

REEL EATS’ next event will be held on April 21st for MONSOON WEDDING! The menu will consist of an all vegetarian style feast that will be prepared by none other than Arvinda’s Spices Preena Chauhan and vegetarian food authority, Nettie Cronish. This is not a night to miss!

Things We Love – Parisian Macarons from Ladurée

Sweet cream filling sandwiched between soft, melt-in-your-mouth meringue shells – that’s the beauty of Parisian macarons!  Not only do we love cupcakes, but we also adore eating and experimenting with macarons and have many happy students who have taken our Marvelous Macaron class with Mardi to prove it.

Tucked in delicate display cases like fine jewels, patisseries from all over the world are catching on to the artistry and fun of this luxurious sweet treat.  We can’t get enough of these dainty sweets and if we had to choose a favourite macaron shop straight from the source, it would have to be Ladurée in Paris, France.  The hush setting of the shop features macarons, cakes, pastries, chocolates, a delicatessen, home fragrances and candles, and beauty products to pamper those sweet cheeks and lips.  It is our version of heaven, in Paris, so we couldn’t ask for anything more.

Our favourite things about Ladurée and their macarons have to be their seasonal flavours  (grape cinnamon, Granny Smith apple, and forêt noire, also known as Black Forest) and how they combine fashion with sweets!  We thought we were happy when we discovered murder mystery novels centred around sweets and cute dessert jewelery and baubles, but incorporating fashion design and sweets just takes the cake!

Ladurée has several collections of macarons that are packaged in fashionable houndstooth boxes and boxes made to replicate the look of luxurious, antique jewelery boxes.  Just think, after you polish off the box of sweet delicious macarons, you can keep the beautiful packaging!  If you have a sweet tooth like we do and love to travel, you absolutely must indulge in this type of Parisian experience! We luv.
