I just returned from a sabbatical abroad in Indonesia and while there my dear friend Min from Hong Kong & Emily from the USA/Indonesia taught me the wonderful game of Mahjong -the HK version.
I fell in love with the game not because it was such a fun game to play, but because it was a great way to meet weekly with a group of ladies who were just so easy to play with, chat with hang out with and be with.
It was truly a community. And now that I am back, I miss that connection.
We had lots of laughs. I heard all the stories of the grandmas meeting on the weekends to play Mahjong in someone's kitchen while and endless line of dumplings would be served and gossiping and chatter would continue all afternoon.
I would love to re-create that here in Toronto in the West End for Junction residents and anyone who loves the game.
We played the Hong Kong style, but I know in North America a lot of people play the North American game.
I would love to continue playing the Hong Kong style and if you know anyone who is a great teacher, your aunty Grandma, or someone who would love to teach us that would be great.
Needless to say I’m not an expert in Mahjong, but I’d love to create a community where people can gather and play this game using our space.
Drop me an email at classroom@ledolci.com to add yourself to the list so we can let you know when our first sessions start.
