Cake Picnic Toronto is Almost Here! Let’s Have Fun and Keep Our Neighbours Safe

Saturday, September 19 is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to see you from 10 AM to 2 PM for our third annual Cake Picnic Toronto! Bring your cake, your friends, and your appetite. There’ll be a DJ, a coffee bar, a photo booth, floral crowns, a glam and henna bar, and a whole park full of cake to share.

Cake Picnic is all about fun, but it’s also about community. Every cake you bring gets shared with your neighbours, so a few simple food safety steps go a long way toward making sure everyone leaves happy and healthy. Here’s your quick refresher before the big day. If you’d like a deeper dive into keeping your bakes safe, check out our food safety post before you get baking.

Before You Bake

•      Wash up first 🧼 — Wash your hands thoroughly before you start, and again after handling raw eggs or messy ingredients.

•      Start clean ✨ — Make sure bowls, utensils, and pans are washed and sanitized before you begin.

•      Handle eggs safely 🥚 — Keep eggs refrigerated until you use them, and resist tasting the raw batter (we know, it’s tempting!).

While You Bake

•      Bake thoroughly 🔥 — Use the toothpick test to be sure the centre is fully baked, with no raw batter hiding inside.

•      Cool completely before frosting ❄️ — A fully cooled cake keeps your frosting from melting and stops trapped heat from encouraging bacteria.

•      Safe buttercream and fillings 🧁 — Use pasteurized eggs for meringue buttercream, and keep cream, custard, or fruit fillings refrigerated until it’s time to serve.

Getting to the Park

•      Store smartly 🥶 — Cakes with perishable fillings (cream, custard, whipped cream, fresh fruit) should stay chilled and travel in a cooler. Buttercream and fondant cakes are generally fine at room temperature for a few hours.

•      Cover for transport 🎂 — Use a cake carrier, food-safe wrap, or a box to protect your cake from dust, bugs, and curious fingers on the way.

At the Picnic

•      Keep it shaded and cool ☀️ — Find a shady spot for your cake and keep perishable cakes out of the sun.

•      Watch the clock ⏰ — Don’t leave perishable cakes out for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if it’s a hot day).

•      Serve safely 🍴 — Use clean serving utensils and plates, and avoid touching the cake directly when cutting or serving.

See You There!

That’s it! A little care in the kitchen means everyone can dig in with confidence. So bake something you love, bring it along on September 19, and let’s make this the sweetest Cake Picnic yet.
