How to Make a Gender Reveal Cake
Whatever colour is going to be revealed inside your baby’s gender reveal cake, there are three main ways to create the hidden surprise of colour.
- Cake Layers
Cake layers are typically coloured with food colouring (or you can experiment with natural colouring options like berry purees). For best results, use a vanilla-based cake and gel food colouring for a vibrant blue/pink/purple coloured cake. If you were set on chocolate, red velvet, carrot or banana cake, don’t worry, you can always go with Colourful Icing or a Sprinkle Explosion (see below) instead!
- Icing Inside the Cake
When building a cake, cake decorators alternate between cake layers and icing. The icing used to build a cake can be a different colour to icing on the outside of the cake. This way, the colour of the icing on the inside of the cake can be kept a surprise! Or were you set on a Naked Cake? In that case, you can still keep the icing surprise hidden by using a ring of neutral coloured icing at the edges of each cake layer.
Icing is typically coloured with food colouring (or you can experiment with natural colouring options like berry purees). For best results, choose a plain or light coloured icing as the base and gel food colouring for vibrant colour.
If you were set on mint-chip, coffee or peanut butter icing, don’t worry, you can always go with Colourful Cake Layers or a Sprinkle Explosion (see below) instead!
- Sprinkle Explosion
A sprinkle explosion is hidden at the center of a cake which spills out as the first slice of cake is cut out. It’s one of our favorite inclusions on a gender reveal cake because it adds an extra element of surprise! You can choose any colour or variety of sprinkles.
A bonus to using a sprinkle explosion for the gender reveal is that you can use any cake and icing combination.
